Matariki is about the New Zealand new year and represents the start of days becoming longer and hopefully the sun shining and temperatures getting warmer. Traditionally it was marked by the appearance of the Matariki cluster in the sky and was celebrated. Each star represents a different aspect of nature.
This year we put our emphasis on sharing Kai. Tutu-a-nuku the star that represents food growing in soil, we celebrated this star by making a vegetable soup and roasting kumara in the oven.
The children were involved in preparing the Kai, they had the opportunity to peel and chop the vegetables and wrap the kumara in foil. They prepared their own cereal and spread their own toast. They sat together with the teachers and enjoyed the food they prepared together.
